No one asked me to do this or told me anyone even cares to hear the ramblings that bounce around inside my head, but here we are. Preface: If you’re already on the fence about my blunt personality, I can tell you right now, this ain’t for you. If you are just here to be a troll, have fun. Most of the f*cks I ever had to give flew out the window right around the time I turned 30 and realized my opinion is the only one I’m going to worry about.
I’m assuming you already know me if you’re here reading this nonsense, but just so we’re all on the same page… My name is Allyssa, I’m a Traveling Emergency Department RN in my early (very very early) 30’s. I’ve got a 6 (almost 7 ) year old rescued American Bulldog/Boxer named Jamo who you’ll soon get to know if you don’t already. I’m single and the traveling part of that equation is brand spankin’ new. Hence the lightbulb for actually documenting the shenanigans that go on in my life. Apparently, the thought never crossed my mind that after 12 years I put in behind the pine (bartending), a total of 15 years in healthcare, and a serious knack for clumsiness that I may have some interesting stories.
So, here goes nothing!
Yesterday Jamo and I left West Allis, Wisconsin and drove 1,300 miles South. Our final destination will be reached next Tuesday; Deerfield Beach, Florida. Until then, we’re spending some much needed family time with my Dad and Step-Mom in Tavares, FL. They are letting us crash with them in the midst of moving out/selling their house! I’m so grateful they’re taking the housing headache and dog hair off my hands for a week during such a stressful time in their lives as well We made the trip to Tavares in 19 hours! Fortunately for me, Jamo is THE best boy with the most chill temperament ever and he just slept almost the entire way. Not a very helpful co-pilot but I wouldn’t trade him for the world. I may have packed up my house and my dog and moved across the country overnight but next week is when the real fun starts… next week I start my new gig! On a whim a few weeks ago, I quit my full time position at a Level 1 Trauma Center in Milwaukee, WI to finally pull the trigger and do travel nursing like I’ve always dreamed. I signed an 8 week contract with a 51 bed ER/Level 2 Trauma Center ED in Deerfield Beach, Florida. This essentially mirrors the layout, acuity and numbers that my previous department had, other than the teaching component to qualify for Level 1 Trauma status.
Jamo and I have an Extended Stay Hotel booked through March at this time. I’m hoping to extend my contract in the ER at Deerfield Beach to 13 weeks but if that doesn’t happen then we’ll flip a coin and what’s next…
Stay tuned, or don’t 🤷♀️
